A review of the Toronto production of Les Misérables as part of the 2023/2024 Mirvish Subscription Series

Les Misérables: A Timeless Epic of Redemption and Revolution

Les Misérables is a cornerstone of musical theatre, and continues to captivate audiences with its powerful story, soaring music, and enduring themes. I first saw it about 35 years ago and it left a lasting impression as one of my favourite theatre shows. When taking our seats in the theatre, Alyne was still on crutches, and an elderly couple near us commented that he too was on crutches when he saw it (also about 35 years ago).

This epic saga, based on Victor Hugo’s novel, transports us to 19th century France, weaving a tale of struggle, sacrifice, and the fight for a better tomorrow.

A Story That Resonates

The heart of Les Mis lies in its timeless themes. Jean Valjean’s journey of redemption from ex-convict to a man seeking goodness is a powerful testament to the human capacity for change. The characters, from the innocent Cosette to the conflicted Inspector Javert, grapple with love, loss, and the fight for justice. The student revolution, fueled by ideals of freedom, resonates with audiences across generations.

A Multicultural, Talented Cast

I appreciated that this Toronto version cast a wide range of ethnicities. While it may be jarring for some to see an ‘Asian’ child version of Cosette become a ‘Caucasian’ adult, I love that they chose the best actors for the roles. The four child actors were also all simply amazing. A few standout performances worth of note in my mind; Nick Cartell as Jean Valjean demonstrated an unworldly ability to hold the high note at the end of “Bring Him Home“, Randy Jeter as The Bishop of Digne during the “Soliloquy” and, Mya Rena Hunter as Éponine during “On My Own

Music that Stirs the Soul

Claude-Michel Schönberg‘s score is a masterpiece. From the hauntingly beautiful “I Dreamed a Dream” to the rousing anthems like “One Day More” and “Do You Hear the People Sing?“, the music evokes a range of emotions and leaves audiences humming the melodies long after the curtain falls. I bought the piano music when I was a kid, and today in my mid-life, they are some of the only songs I can still play from memory. I played that music book from front to back – probably the only one I ever did that with.

A Spectacle to Behold

Les Misérables is not just a musical; it’s a theatrical experience. The set design for this run was spectacular with a few new tricks I hadn’t seen before. The sides of the sage could slide in transporting us to the bustling streets of Paris, narrow streets surrounded by two story buildings. The costuming was well done. Two scenes in particular stood out for the staging; the immensity of the barricade which I was expecting to be impressive, but it never fails to be amazing to see a set piece that large, and; the flight through the sewers which utilized lighting to create a disappearing black tunnel in the middle of the stage (and was also used for Javert’s bridge scene). The group choreography for the “One More Day” number was also delightfully done, with simplicity building an impressive visual.

A Show with Layers

Les Misérables isn’t without its complexities. Some may find the operatic score overwhelming, and the relentless focus on revolution might feel dated. However, the core themes of redemption, love, and the pursuit of justice remain as relevant today as ever. The show also draws viewers through a wide range of emotions – more than say the more mono-emotional Phantom Of The Opera.

Recommendation: Les Misérables is a monumental achievement in musical theatre. Its powerful story, unforgettable score, and grand production make it a must-see for anyone who loves a good musical. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer, Les Misérables is a show that will stay with you long after the final curtain call.
