For all my Book Reviews I use the following categories. Results are then tallied and averaged to come up with the final score.
Core Literary Elements
- Plot (5 stars possible): Consider the originality of the story, pacing, structure (e.g., linear, non-linear), and overall effectiveness in keeping you engaged.
- Characters (5 stars possible): Evaluate the depth and development of the characters, their believability, and how their actions drive the story.
- Writing Style (5 stars possible): Assess the author’s use of language, voice, and tone. Consider clarity, flow, and how well the style complements the story.
- World Building (5 stars possible): For fantasy, sci-fi, or novels with a heavily developed setting, consider the creation and believability of the fictional world – its rules, history, and atmosphere.
- Dialogue (5 stars possible): Evaluate how well the dialogue reveals characters, advances the plot, and feels natural within the story’s setting and genre.
Book Specific Categories
- Pacing (5 stars possible): Consider how well the story unfolds, if there are sections that drag or feel rushed, and if the overall pacing keeps you invested.
- Theme (5 stars possible): Analyze the underlying themes of the book and how effectively they are explored.
Reading Experience
- Engagement (5 stars possible): Similar to the other systems, consider how well the book held your attention, evoked emotions, or sparked thought-provoking moments.
