For all my Movie Reviews I use the following categories. Results are then tallied and averaged to come up with the final score.
Core Cinematic Elements
- Script (5 stars possible): Similar to the theatre system, consider plot originality, character development, dialogue quality, and overall effectiveness in conveying the story.
- Acting (5 stars possible): Evaluate the acting performances based on technical skills (delivery, emotional range, believability) and character embodiment.
- Directing (5 stars possible): Assess the director’s vision in translating the script to film. Consider pacing, editing choices, shot composition, and overall style.
- Cinematography (5 stars possible): Evaluate the technical and artistic quality of the camerawork, lighting, shot selection, and use of color to create a visually engaging and immersive experience.
- Sound Design & Editing (5 stars possible): Consider the quality of the soundtrack, sound effects, and how effectively they create atmosphere, build tension, and support the story.
Movie Specific Categories
- Special Effects (5 stars possible): Evaluate the seamlessness, believability, and impact of any visual effects used in the film.
- Costumes & Production Design (5 stars possible): Consider the quality and effectiveness of the costumes, set design, and props in creating a believable world and supporting the story and characters.
- Score (5 stars possible): For movies with a strong musical element, assess the quality of the original score, its integration with the film, and its effectiveness in setting mood and enhancing the narrative.
Overall Experience
- Engagement (5 stars possible): Similar to the theatre system, consider how well the movie held your attention, evoked emotions, or sparked thought-provoking moments.
